A hero with no character
Macunaíma is a canonical work of Brazilian literature. It's one of those books that every Brazilian teenager will be required to read in High School, and would probably be in every major university list of mandatory works to be read.
To be honest, first time I read it, I was not a big fan of it. The narrative can be confusing, and the characters and the subtext are maybe too complex for the understanding of the teenage mind. So when I received the task to create a cover for it, my old prejudiced prevented me to be excited. And maybe that was good.
Free from any emotional attachment, I work on this project with a much more professional and distant approach, I did not feel the pressure to be perfect. However, the more I researched and dove into the universe of the book, I was reminded of the brilliance of it, and why it is such an important work of literature.
I was fascinated by how Mario de Andrade worked the Brazilian folklore, a theme I was always attracted to, and that I always wanted to feature in my work. In the end, it turned out to be one of the works I'm most proud of.
