Hello! I'm Paulo!
I'm a Brazil-based freelance illustrator, with a focus on - but not limited to - children illustration. I'm passionate about fantasy, sci-fi and other other-worldly themes that are very common in this kind of literary work. Among some of my favorite books are The Lord of The Rings, Harry Potter, The Chronicles of Narnia, and His Dark Materials. I'm also a big comic book and strips enthusiast, with The Adventures of Tintin, Asterix and Peanuts among my favorites. All of these, together with multiple other references from movies (hello, Indiana Jones and Star Wars!) and pop culture in general are the basis for my work as an illustrator.
I have a Bachelor's degree in Marketing & Advertising, from ESPM-SP, in Brazil, a Masters of Science degree in Journalism, from Northwestern University, in Chicago, and a Masters of Arts degree in Communications and Semiotics, from PUC-SP, also in Brazil.
After 15 years working in advertising agencies, I recently changed career paths to illustration.
I have been drawing since I was a kid. As such, my basis is in traditional media, specially watercolor and colored pencils, both of which I search to emulate digitally, bringing agility to the creative process. I believe my technique, allied with my creative references, collaborate to create playful and colorful illustrations, with a strong, narrative style, featuring fine details in the search to transport the viewer to imaginary worlds.
